Truth be told, there is freedom in missing out. Everyone on this planet is given only 24 hours in a day. After spending time sleeping, working, eating, and hygiene, we are left with very little time to actually enjoy being alive. Why waste this time on social media or watching other forms of mind-numbing media. Sometimes missing out on enjoying a useless on any form of media, or staying hyper informed, is the needed, to have a form of true fulfilment.
We also need to focus on real connections with real people who care about us in our lives, but social media relationships have replaced relationships with people in our non-virtual lives. It can be easy for our minds to confuse likes, comments, and batter, with connections with genuine people. These apps do a great job imitating these relationships, with some detrimental side effects. Real people do have social media, but not all are friendly, or even run by a real person. It’s becoming harder and harder to differentiate the difference between an account of a real person versus a misleading digital personification.
However, the most rapidly lost commodity, on the internet is time… the most valuable resource we have. Life is too short already. With the new advent of easy access to the internet comes the first generation of humans, who waste significant portions of their lives staring at the screen. It is sad that so many are sacrificing this gift of time, for some cheap entertainment. How many people of the younger generation will look back on their lives with discase, after wasting all their younger years, staring at a screen. It’s true that the older generations spent their younger years more wisely, without the over consumption of screen time. Before the invention of all these electronics, people had to get their enjoyment, from the people closest to them, or something at least from something more tangible than pixels. However more and more, people neglect the real world for the digital. Even time spent outside, or being active, has become less, due to this cheap media. We’ve forgotten that humans were made to do more than just stare at a screen.
However, for people who want pursue knowledge, focus, or help memorize the internet has adds more value to our lives, with this technological ability. We now have access to tons of tools that can fit in our pocket, with the power to connect us to anyone in the world, in a moment’s notice. Why waste this power for yourself?
The golden rule of making the most of the internet is to “Create more and consume less.” Life sucks when all we enjoy for entertainment is spoon feed to us. Deep down most of us have a desire to create or do things that are admired by others. However usually the first step into achieving this fulfilment is to free up personal time, by replacing useless times activities, with building, learning, or mastering something new and tangible, even if we later use the internet to share our creation with the world.
When we need to remember we are only as smart as we act. When using the internet make sure we have a clear intent and purpose in what we are doing online, as to be conscious as to not waste time. This is easier said than done since most people already made mindless scrolling an instinctual habit, especially when boredom or loneliness hits. However breaking routine procrastination and distraction might first take a break in bad habits.
We all have a passion in life we need to chase. The screen time in our lives can be a tool that helps us pursue our goals, instead of a place where we waste precious time in a gaze. People who learn how to use the internet can generate great influence and power if they know how to use it. Why can’t the average person tap into that power regularly, by organizing different people, with different skill sets to put together projects, almost like how different units are organized and set up to do different things. This gives people a lot more influence than working alone. Knowing how to build a network, around a specific topic inside social circle on social media, can be a powerful tool.
